Mandalay by Night
The Moustache Brothers
The infamous bros have been performing their brand of political satire a la vaudeville folk opera for over 30 years. As a result of secret police posing as audience, two of the three members have been imprisoned numerous times, as recently as during the last bloody protest against the government in 2007. The troupe has been banned from public performance and now operate out of their home. In another attempt to fly under radar, they have switched from Burmese to English and the performance revolves around an ‘if we were to do a show this is what it would be like’ demonstration. Seems incredible but in fact this is how they are able, for now, to get around being arrested. We were moved by the courage it takes to publicly discuss the political situation even if most of their references are outdated (guess the General is ok with events in yesterday’s news).
