New Cat City

Borneo is the 5th largest island in the world and is comprised of 2 Malaysian provinces, the sultanate of Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia.  “Cat” in Malay, Kuching is the capital of the Malaysian province of Sarawak and they’ve way overdrawn on the creepy feline statue account.  Although a city of a half million inhabitants even on a weekend visit the streets seem sparse.  It’s a world away from KL with wide boulevards, mildly respected traffic signs and a chill pace.  What struck us most was the new airport, high end cars and the almost American sounding English spoken by many Kuchingees.  Strangest was hearing the lyrics “… West Virginia, mountain momma, Take me home, country roads” boom out of loud speakers on three separate occasions.
